If Etsy's October 22 email made your stomach drop a little, you're definitely not alone. We heard from a lot of print-on-demand sellers who read "unedited photo of the actual item" and pictured reshooting their entire shop over the weekend. So let's start with the good part: you almost certainly don't have to. There's a print-on-demand exception, and most of what Etsy is asking for is stuff you're already doing.
The short version: On October 22, 2026, Etsy tightened its AI rules. Most listings now need one unedited photo of the real item, but if a print partner puts your original design on a standard product like a tee or mug, an authorized mockup still counts. AI-made designs are still welcome when you're clearly the one creating them and you mention AI was used. Listings made entirely by bots are out.
Etsy's full announcement lives in the Seller Handbook if you want to read the whole thing. We went through it with POD shops in mind and pulled out what matters for you: what changed, what it means for your mockups and designs, and a short, doable list of fixes for this week.
So, what changed in Etsy's AI rules?
Four things changed. You now need one untouched photo per listing (with some helpful exceptions), AI-written patterns and recipes are gone, listings with no human behind them get removed, and Etsy is building tools to spot AI images. And the part we were happiest to see: AI art is still welcome on Etsy, as long as you're upfront about it.

Here's every change at a glance, and whether it's worth worrying about for a print-on-demand shop:
| The change | In plain English | Should you worry? |
|---|---|---|
| Unedited photo | One photo of the real thing, on a real background, with no edits at all | Not much. Authorized mockups still work for standard POD products |
| Accurate photos | Every photo should look like what lands on your buyer's doorstep | A little. Just make sure your mockup matches the real product |
| Photo editing | Edit your other photos all you like, AI included, as long as the item looks the same | Nope. Keep your lifestyle shots |
| Patterns and recipes | No more AI-written patterns, recipes or instructions | Only if you sell digital guides |
| Bot-made listings | Listings with no human involved get pulled, and the shop can go too | Only if nobody looks at your listings before they go live |
| AI art | Still allowed when you're clearly the creator and you mention AI | Nope, just add one line to your listing |
| Refunds | If the item isn't what the photos promised, the refund may be on you | Only if your photos oversell |
| AI image detection | The listing form will flag AI images and give you tips | Nope, think of it as a friendly heads-up |
| Buyer reports | Shoppers get a new "misleading AI" report option, with no instant penalties at first | Not right now |
| California SB 1050 | AI-generated people in your ads may need a label from January 1, 2027 | Only if your mockups use AI models |
Why is Etsy doing this now? Etsy says a lot of buyers can't tell which items involve AI anymore, and it's become one of the top three things holding them back from shopping more. If you've ever lost a sale to a too-perfect listing from a shop that appeared out of nowhere, you know the feeling. Rules that reward honest shops are good news for the people who put real care into theirs, and that's you.
Can you still use mockups on Etsy for print on demand?
Yes! You can keep your mockups. If a print partner prints your original design on a standard product like a tee or a mug, Etsy lets you use a stock mockup instead of the unedited photo, as long as whoever owns that mockup is okay with you using it. It just needs to look like the shirt your buyer actually opens.
The one word to keep an eye on is "authorized." These are all safe bets:
- Mockups from your print provider. The ones Printify or Printful make for your product are meant for exactly this.
- Mockup packs you're licensed to use. Free or paid, as long as the license covers selling on marketplaces.
- Your own photos of a sample you ordered. (Bonus points if your cat wanders into frame.)
And a few are worth a second look when you have a quiet moment:
- Mockups that don't quite match. A fitted tee in the photo and a boxy heavyweight tee in the mail, a slightly different color, or a print spot your provider can't actually print.
- Moody AI lifestyle scenes in the first slot. Etsy wants your first photo to be the clearest, most honest look at the item. Your pretty scenes are still very welcome in photos two through ten.
- AI-generated people. There's a small California wrinkle there, which we walk through in the section on AI models.

If you use Playground Sandbox with Printify, here's a little time-saver: it can send your Printify mockups straight to the matching Etsy listing, so the authorized ones land right where they belong, no downloading and re-uploading. The Printify connector guide walks you through it step by step.
Do you have to mention AI in your Etsy listings?
Yes, and it's much easier than it sounds. If AI helped you create the design, just say so in the listing. Etsy still welcomes AI art when you're clearly the creative one: your idea, your prompt, your edits, your call on the final version. The only real no-go is passing it off as handmade or as something made without AI.
All it takes is one friendly sentence in your listing description. Something like:
Original design created by [Your Shop Name] using AI design tools, then edited and finalized by us. Printed and shipped by our print-on-demand partner.

Feel free to put it in your own words. Buyers tend to appreciate a shop that's open about how things are made, and it builds the kind of trust that turns a first sale into a repeat customer. Two small habits help too:
- Make the design truly yours. Change the words, the colors, the layout, the subject. That's the fun part anyway, and it's what makes your shop feel like your shop.
- Add your production partner. Etsy already asks POD sellers to list their print partner in shop settings and link it to the right listings. You don't even have to name the company. "Print on demand provider" works perfectly.
Etsy also suggests mentioning when you used AI to edit your photos. That one's completely optional, though it's one more sentence and buyers really do like knowing.

What's an "unedited photo" on Etsy, and do you need one?
An unedited photo is simply a photo of the real item, on a real background, straight off your camera. No cropping, no resizing, no brightening, no background swap. All your other listing photos can be edited however you like, AI included, as long as the item still looks like itself.

If you sell POD on standard products, your authorized mockup has you covered. The rule only gets a bit stricter if:
- Your partner makes a one-of-a-kind item you designed, like furniture, a custom-cut garment or a printed book. Show the real thing.
- You sell custom or made-to-order work. Share real examples of pieces you've made before.
- You sell patterns, recipes or instructions. Show something you actually made with them, not an AI picture of how it might turn out.
Here's one of our favorite little tips, even though you don't strictly need it: order samples of your five best sellers and add one plain phone photo to each, maybe on your kitchen table or a favorite chair. Buyers love seeing the real thing, it makes your shop feel more personal, and you'll be ready if Etsy ever tightens things further.
Is Etsy banning AI listings?
No, you can keep using AI to help you. Etsy is only banning listings made entirely by bots, with no person involved, and those get removed (sometimes along with the shop). Using AI for designs, titles or photos is still completely fine. Etsy just wants to know there's a real person behind every item, and that person is you.
So keep batching if it helps you get more done. Just give everything a quick look before it goes live. A simple, calm setup:
- Start from a prompt or a template, then make it yours.
- Look over each design before it becomes a product, and let go of any you're not excited about.
- Save listings as drafts. Give the title, tags and description a quick read before anything goes live.
- Approve changes in small batches you can actually read. Ten at a time feels a lot nicer than two hundred.
We built Playground Sandbox to work exactly this way, because we wanted sellers to stay in charge. New Etsy listings show up as drafts, and title and tag rewrites wait for your OK before anything changes. The Etsy connector guide shows how it all fits together.
What about AI models in your Etsy mockups?
Etsy doesn't ban them, but it kindly gives sellers a heads-up about a new California law, SB 1050, that starts January 1, 2027. Listing photos can count as ads, and ads featuring a realistic AI-generated person (Etsy calls it a "synthetic performer") may need a clear label for buyers in California.
The easiest fix is to stop leading with AI models. Flat lays, hanger shots, product-only photos and real people who've said yes all sidestep it nicely, and a lot of buyers find them more relatable anyway. If you love your AI-model mockup, that's okay: move it out of the first slot and add a disclosure buyers will actually see. And if you're unsure how the law applies to your shop, Etsy suggests checking with a lawyer.
Your Etsy AI to-do list for this week
Grab a coffee, put on a good playlist, and set aside one afternoon. Start with your best sellers, since those are the listings you'll want looking their best if a buyer ever has a question.
- Look at the first photo on your top 20 listings. It should be the clearest, most honest view of the product, not a styled AI scene.
- Make sure every mockup is one you're allowed to use, either from your provider or a pack you're licensed for.
- Move AI-model mockups out of the first slot, and plan a label before January 1 if you sell to California.
- Add an AI disclosure line to every listing with a design you made using AI.
- Set your production partner in shop settings and link it to your POD listings.
- Order samples of your best sellers and add one plain phone photo to each.
- Switch off anything that publishes listings without you. Drafts and approvals only.
- Pull or rewrite any AI-written patterns, recipes or printables, and add a photo of a real result.

That's really it. Most shops find the majority of their listings were already in great shape.
How to make Etsy-friendly designs on Playground
The recipe is simple: keep your personal touch on the design and keep the listing honest. Start from a template or a prompt, play with it until it's clearly yours, export it, then pair it with your print provider's mockups and a one-line AI disclosure. The whole design side happens in one editor.
- Open the Playground design editor and pick a template, or click New Design and describe your idea in the prompt bar. It's Christmas season, so the Christmas t-shirt templates are a cozy place to start.
- Make it yours. Swap the phrase, change the colors, move things around, and regenerate the subject until it feels like your shop. This is the creative part Etsy wants to see from you, and the most fun part of the whole process.
- Clean it up for print. Use Remove Background in the editor's tool panel for a transparent file, and Upscale if it needs to be sharper.
- Export and upload the file to your print provider.
- Use your provider's mockups for the listing, add your own sample photo when you have one, and paste your AI disclosure into the description.
To sell what you make, you'll need Playground Pro. It includes the commercial license and runs $12 a month billed annually.
What if a listing doesn't meet Etsy's new AI rules?
Don't panic. In most cases, the first thing you'll see is a gentle nudge in the listing form when Etsy spots an AI image, along with tips to fix it. Listings that use AI to fake inventory can be removed, bot-only listings can take a shop down, and if a buyer gets something that doesn't match your photos, the refund may come out of your pocket. Honest shops have very little to worry about here.

If a listing ever gets removed by mistake, you can appeal from the Policy violations page in Shop Manager, the same way you would for any other policy issue. And the new "misleading AI" reports from buyers won't lead to penalties right away. Etsy says it'll use them to learn what buyers find misleading first, then step up enforcement over time.
What Etsy hasn't figured out yet
Etsy calls this a starting point, so a few things are still a little fuzzy, and that's okay:
- How much human input is enough to not count as bot-made.
- What happens with your phone's auto-editing, since most phone cameras tweak photos on their own before you even touch them.
- Whether placeholder images are okay as the first photo on personalized items.
- When the AI image checks reach listings you've already published. For now Etsy just says "over time."
Etsy also says it's working on tools to help sellers show they made their designs. Saving your working files and edit history for each design costs nothing and could come in handy. We'll keep watching for updates and share anything new right here, so you don't have to keep checking.

Quick answers to the questions we keep hearing
What are Etsy's new AI rules?
Announced October 22, 2026, they ask for one unedited photo of the real item in most listings, ban AI-written patterns and recipes and bot-made listings, and keep AI art welcome when you're clearly the creator and you mention it.
Can I still use mockups for print on demand on Etsy?
Yes. If a print partner puts your original design on a standard product like a tee or mug, you can use a stock mockup you're authorized to use. It just needs to look like what your buyer gets.
Do I need an unedited photo for print on demand listings?
Not for standard POD products with an authorized mockup. You do need a real photo if your partner makes a one-of-a-kind item you designed. A real sample photo is still a lovely trust boost.
Do I have to disclose AI on Etsy?
Yes, if AI helped create the item itself, including your designs. Mentioning AI-edited photos is recommended but optional.
Can I sell AI art on Etsy in 2026?
Yes, as long as you're clearly the creative one, you mention the AI use, and you don't call it handmade or entirely your own creation.
Are AI-generated listings banned on Etsy?
Only listings made entirely by bots with no person involved. AI-assisted listings that you review and control are totally fine.
Can I use AI models in my Etsy mockups?
Etsy doesn't ban them, but California's SB 1050 may require a label for realistic AI-generated people in ads from January 1, 2027. Product-only mockups avoid the question entirely.
What happens if Etsy detects AI images in my listing?
You'll see helpful tips in the listing form to show the item accurately. Etsy plans to enforce more over time, and you can appeal any removal in Shop Manager.
Do I need to update my existing Etsy listings?
Yes, if they don't meet the new photo rules. Start with your best sellers and anything whose first photo is an AI scene. Most shops only need a handful of tweaks.
Can I still use AI to edit my Etsy photos?
Yes, on every photo except the one unedited shot, as long as the item still looks like what your buyer will receive.
You've got this. Etsy's new rules are really just a nudge toward what great shops already do: real designs, honest photos and a person who cares behind every listing. When you're ready to make something new, open the Playground design editor, pick a template, and make it your own. We can't wait to see what you create.
Updated October 2026.
